For the most part, this has been fueled by both the necessity of diversifying energy sources and the societal pressure to cope with climate change and the issues brought about by the required technological development. Research into metal (mis)behavior in the presence of Hydrogen, to cite an example, which has long been an important topic in Structural Integrity, gradually came under the focus of a growing number of scientists due to its importance in Hydrogen storage. In testimony of the importance of this topic, nearly one-fourth of all ICSI2023 accepted abstracts focusing on Hydrogen Embrittlement-related topics.
Concomitantly, the experimental activity related to experimental validation in new simulation concepts and applications, and novel applications for validated simulation models which, for instance, enable sensor virtualization, together with disruptive sensing technologies from the realm of science fiction a mere couple of years ago, are paving the way for a revamped R&D arena, with implications in most Engineering fields. From the very start, five editions ago, ICSI has focused on all aspects and scales of structural integrity, ranging from basics to future trends, with special emphasis on multi-scale and multi-physics approaches, and applications to new materials and challenging environments. Current research topics in the realm of Structural Integrity targeted by ICSI2023 include, but are not limited to Fracture and Fatigue, Stress Analysis, Damage Tolerance, Durability, Crack Closure, Joining Technologies, Nanomechanics and Nanomaterials, Ageing, Coatings Technology, Environmental Effects, Structural Health Monitoring, New materials, Surface Engineering, Integrity of biomechanics structures in and many other exciting research topics.
In 2023, the ICSI organization focused on inviting lecturers related to topics that dominate the contemporary status in Structural Integrity, such as Prof. Frank Cheng from the University of Calgary, working in the field of corrosion engineering and pipeline reliability, Prof. Su Taylor from Queen’s University in Belfast, devoted to the development of structural health monitoring of sustainable infrastructure; Prof. José Correia from Porto University, fully engaged in Structural Integrity of energy infrastructure; Prof. César Azevedo well known for his contribution in structural failure and Prof. Zagorac, from Belgrade University, working in the field of material behavior under extreme conditions. Like previous editions, ICSI2023 has been organized into a general track and a number of thematic symposia. Apart from Procedia Structural Integrity, a special issue from Engineering Failure Analysis will cover ICSI2023.
The response to the organization’s efforts has been outstanding: Thirteen symposia were proposed; the number of abstract submissions was kept at a similar level to previous editions, with around 200 approved for oral communication.
These are very challenging times for the organization of meaningful conferences, but the organizers strived to make this 5th Edition a memorable one, which will stimulate both young and well-known researchers in the field to contribute further to ICSI.
2024-03-04T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/238Third European Conference on the Structural Integrity of Additively Manufactures Materials (ESIAM23)2024-02-11T05:19:47+00:00
Edited by
Filippo Berto Professor
Francesco Iacoviello Professor
Abílio De Jesus Professor
Jan Torgersen Professor
Sabrina Vantadori Professor
2024-02-11T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/237Fracture, Damage and Structural Health Monitoring2024-02-04T17:53:51+00:00
Guest editors:
Ali Mehmanparast
Zahra Sharif Khodaei
Ferri Aliabadi
2024-02-04T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Authorshttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/233ICF13A - 20132023-12-30T14:35:35+00:00
ICF13
Beijing (China)
2013
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/234ICF13B - 20132023-12-30T14:38:17+00:00
ICF13
Beijing (China)
2013
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/235ICF13C - 20132023-12-30T14:39:19+00:00
ICF13
Beijing (China)
2013
2023-12-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/232ICF12 - 20092023-12-28T14:52:00+00:00
ICF12

Ottawa (Canada)

2009
2023-12-29T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/231ICF11 20052023-12-28T05:47:32+00:00
ICF11
Torino (Italy)
2005
2023-12-28T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/227ICF10A - 20012023-12-27T18:03:50+00:00
ICF10
Honolulu (USA)
2001
2023-12-27T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/228ICF10B - 20012023-12-27T18:09:54+00:00
ICF10
Honolulu (USA)
2001
2023-12-27T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/229ICF10C - 20012023-12-27T18:38:31+00:00
ICF10
Honolulu (USA)
2001
2023-12-27T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/230ICF10D - 20012023-12-27T18:42:19+00:00
ICF10
Honolulu (USA)
2001
2023-12-27T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/224ICF9-A 19972023-12-26T14:30:13+00:00
ICF 9

Sydney, Australia

1997
2023-12-26T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/225ICF9-B 19972023-12-26T14:36:19+00:00
ICF 9

Sydney, Australia

1997
2023-12-26T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/226ICF9-C 19972023-12-26T14:40:57+00:00
ICF 9

Sydney, Australia

1997
2023-12-26T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/2363rd International Workshop on Plasticity, Damage and Fracture of Engineering Materials2024-01-11T17:25:46+00:00Tuncay Yalcinkaya
4-6 October 2023,

Instanbul, Turkiye
2023-12-01T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/2236th International Conference on Structural Integrity and Durability (ICSID 2022)2023-11-27T17:23:40+00:00
Edited by:

Zeljko Bozic

Siegfried Schmauder

Katarina Monkova

George Pantazopoulos

Sergio Baragetti

Goran Vukelic

Francesco Iacoviello

2023-11-28T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 https://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/22116th International Conference on Mechanics, Resource and Diagnostics of Materials and Structures (MRDMS 2022)2023-11-18T17:08:14+00:00

Edited by

Evgeny Prosviryakov Professor

Yulia Khudorozhkova Dr.

<div id="gtx-trans" style="position: absolute; ECF started out in 1973 in France, as the 1st European Colloquium on Fracture, and rapidly become a reference event focused on Fracture Mechanics and Structural Integrity related topics. It has been traveling around Europe, and the previous event was held in Belgrade in 2018. It has the mission to promote research focused on topics related to all fracture phenomena, structural integrity and monitoring, contributing for the improvement of the reliability of systems, through focused R&D in applied mechanics.

This conference was the twentieth edition of a globally recognized event in the field of structural mechanics. The importance of the event required us to apply for its organization in 2014 in its edition in Trondheim, Norway. Since then, it has passed through Catania and Belgrade, now having Funchal as its destination in 2022, after the postponement due to the pandemic situation in 2020. A Summer School was also included in this organization from the 25th to the 26th of June, held at the premises of the Rectory of the University of Madeira. This first event was mainly dedicated to young students and researchers, who can enjoy the experience of renowned speakers and exchange experiences with each other.

Despite all difficulties related to the pandemic, the scientific community response was outstanding: a total of 505 delegates from 40 countries attended the event. A total of 616 abstracts were submitted, and 457 were accepted for oral presentations, divided in 96 parallel sessions, and 71 for Poster presentations. Apart from the publication of the proceedings in Procedia Structural Integrity, special issues in Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, Engineering Fracture Mechanics, International Journal of Fatigue and Engineering Failure Analysis were also offered. In the two days prior to the ECF23 conference, a Summer School on Fracture Mechanics and Structural Integrity took place, and four well known Lecturers attracted the presence of 90 delegates.
2023-01-03T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 Authorshttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/1932nd International Workshop on Plasticity, Damage and Fracture of Engineering Materials2022-11-24T16:19:52+00:00Tuncay YalcinkayaMehmet Dördüncü
18-20 August, 2021

Ankara, Turkey
2022-11-24T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 Tuncay Yalcinkaya, Mehmet Dördüncühttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/194The 1st International Workshop on Plasticity, Damage and Fracture of Engineering Materials2022-11-24T16:39:17+00:00Tuncay YalcinkayaCihan Tekoglu
22-23 August, Ankara, Turkey
2022-11-24T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 Tuncay Yalcinkaya, Cihan Tekogluhttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/191Mathematical Physics2022-11-20T16:27:27+00:00Dragoslav KuzmanovićIvan ObradovićDobrika NikolićMihailo Lazarević
This book is mainly based on the material initially published in Serbian, in 2021, by the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology, under the title Mathematical Physics (Theory and Examples). It makes use oof the Irwin crack closure integral to obtain values of the modes I, II and III energy release rates from finite data. Using the energy release rate, the stress intensity factors may be obtained. In the literature, failure criteria make use of the stress intensity factors. Thus, accurate values for the stress intensity factors are valuable. It was seen in the literature that i was difficult to obtain accurate results for interface cracks with VCCT. In Banks-Sills and Farkash (2016), a criterion was proposed to overcome this difficulty for this method allowing accurate calculation of stress intensity factors for two-dimensional problems of an interface crack between two dissimilar linea elastic, homogenous and isotropic materials with fine meshes. For this criterion, new energy release rates were presented, namely, the dual energy release rates. The virtual crack extension (VCE) consists of a number of elements rather than one element as was used in previous studies. The new criterion indicates the optimal number of elements to be used as the VCE.
2022-10-07T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing House; Elad Farkashhttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/1082nd European Conference on Fracture2022-10-06T03:22:02+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Darmstadt, Germany

1978
2022-10-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/1093rd European Conference on Fracture2022-10-06T03:24:54+00:00ESIS Publishing House
London, UK

1980
2022-10-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/1104th European Conference on Fracture2022-10-06T03:29:19+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Lisbon, Portugal

1982
2022-10-06T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/1115th European Conference on Fracture2022-10-06T03:33:30+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Leoben, Austria

1984
<div id="gtx-trans" style="position: absolute; Climate change itself is the connecting element and affects both cultural landscapes and cultural heritage. Higher Education (HE) students are given the chance to learn about applicable maintenance, preparedness and preservation measures by developing tailored measures for a given site and by implementing and actually testing their ideas. The concept focuses on the effects of climate change in a certain climate zone, and develops possibilities to teach sustainable, eco-friendly and cost-efficient preparedness measures for built cultural heritage and maintenance measures for cultural landscapes. The whole concept is hybrid, student-centred, following a strict hands-on approach and is research based. The entire concept of the School can easily be transferred to other frameworks.
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 Chiara Bertolin, America Califano, Markus Schwaihttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/55Third IJFatigue & FFEMS Workshop “Characterization of Crack Tip Fields”2022-10-02T04:21:57+00:00ESIS Publishing House
April 20 - 22, 2015 – Urbino, Italy
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/56The second IJF & FFEMS “Challenges in Multiaxial Fatigue” 2022-10-02T04:25:18+00:00ESIS Publishing House
April 12-14, 2017 – Bonifacio, France
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/57The 4th IJF & FFEMS Workshop “Characterization of Crack Tip Fields”2022-10-02T04:28:49+00:00ESIS Publishing House
April 10-12, 2017 – Bonifacio, France
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/58Fracture and Structural integrity: ten years of ‘Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale’2022-10-02T04:32:18+00:00ESIS Publishing House
June 4-6, 2018 - Cassino
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/59IGF192022-10-02T04:36:14+00:00ESIS Publishing House
July 2-4, 2007 - Milano
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/60IGF202022-10-02T04:40:29+00:00ESIS Publishing House
June 24-26, 2009 - Torino
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/61IGF26 - 26th International Conference on Fracture and Structural Integrity2022-10-02T04:43:38+00:00ESIS Publishing House
May 26-31, 2021 - Turin
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/621st Mediterranean Conference on Fracture and Structural Integrity, MedFract12022-10-02T04:46:43+00:00ESIS Publishing House
February 26-28, 2020, Athens, Greece
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/63XV Portuguese Conference on Fracture, PCF 2016, 10-12 February 2016, Paco de Arcos, Portugal2022-10-02T09:15:07+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Edited by Francesco Iacoviello, Luis Reis, Manuel Fonte, Manuel Freitas, Virgínia Infante
Volume 1,
Pages 1-318 (2016)
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/64ECF212022-10-02T09:23:32+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Edited by Francesco Iacoviello, Luca Susmel, Donato Firrao, Giuseppe Ferro

Volume 2,

Pages 1-3798 (2016)
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/65XXIV Italian Group of Fracture Conference, 1-3 March 2017, Urbino, Italy2022-10-02T09:29:28+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Edited by Francesco Iacoviello, Luca Susmel, Donato Firrao, Giuseppe Ferro
Volume 3,
Pages 1-588 (2017)
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/66ESIS TC24 Workshop "Integrity of Railway Structures", 24-25 October 2016, Leoben, Austria2022-10-02T14:18:46+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Edited by Hans-Peter Gänser, Stefano Beretta
Volume 4,
Pages 1-114 (2017)
2022-10-02T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/672nd International Conference on Structural Integrity, ICSI 2017, 4-7 September 2017, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal2022-10-02T14:22:36+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Edited by Francesco Iacoviello, Pedro M.G.P. However, composite material structures are sensitive to the presence of damage such as delamination, which is one of the most typical failure modes in laminate composites. A delamination may be induced during the manufacturing process or may be caused by inadvertent impact damage after manufacturing.
2022-04-16T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 Orly Dolevhttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/6Mixed mode fracture behavior of a multi-directional laminate composite produced by a wet layup2022-02-08T11:49:01+00:00Mor Mega
Carbon fiber reinforced polymers are used for improving performance and lowering operational costs of structures, particularly in the aerospace industry. However, lack of knowledge of the fracture behavior of these composites may result in catastrophic disasters. Understanding delamination initiation and propagation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminates (CFRPs) may assist in preventing catastrophic failures of structures such as airplanes. Precise engineering tools may lead to safer design, improved performance, as well as lowered operational costs of structures constructed from these materials.
This study focuses on a delamination between two fiber reinforced composite plies. The upper ply is a UD fabric with fibers oriented in the 0o- direction and the lower ply is a plain balanced weave with tows oriented in the +45o/-45o - directions. The composite is manufactured by a wet-layup process.

Twenty-seven successful mixed mode fracture toughness tests were carried out using Brazilian disk specimens to determine the fracture toughness properties of this composite and interface. During each test, a load P was applied at an angle omega with respect to an artificial delamination located between the investigated plies. Seven loading angles were used to achieve different mixed mode combinations. Based on the results, using finite element analyses in conjunction with the three-dimensional conservative interaction energy integral or M-integral and the displacement extrapolation method, the stress intensity factors resulting from mechanical loads, as well as residual curing stresses were obtained along the delamination front for each specimen. The stress intensity factors were superposed and used to calculate the interface initiation energy release rate and mode mixities or phase angles. Finally, two and three-dimensional failure criteria were proposed for this material and interface and a statistical analysis with a 10% probability of unexpected failure in the safe zone with a confidence of 95% was performed. The failure curves and surfaces may be used to predict catastrophic failure for this material and interface, as well as to lead to a better understanding of interlaminar delamination.

Initiation and propagation properties were determined based on nearly mode I, nearly mode II and mixed mode fracture toughness and fracture resistance tests. For mode I, DCB tests, which were performed and described in Chocron and Banks-Sills (2019), were reanalyzed. For the nearly mode II and mixed mode initiation and resistance properties, C-ELS and MMELS fracture tests were performed, respectively, and analyzed. These tests were quasi-static and consisted of two stages. In the first test stage, an artificial delamination was extended and in the second test stage, propagation from a natural precrack was observed.
The experimental and numerical results obtained from the tests were employed to determine the fracture resistance GiR-curves for nearly mode I, nearly mode II and for one mixed mode I/II deformation ratio. The GiR-curves were generated by means of a local M-integral approach, as well as by means of the global experimental compliance method (ECM) and included determination of the initiation Gic and steady-state propagation Giss values. The GiR-curves obtained using both methods were compared for each tested specimen. In addition, the phase angles psi and phi which define the mode mixities, were calculated for each specimen and test.
The R-curves found may be used to account for the fracture resistance energy release rate required for propagation and to assist in improving the design and safety of a structure made of this laminate with this interface.
2022-04-03T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 Mor Megahttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/232nd Mediterranean Conference on Fracture and Structural Integrity2022-04-03T07:34:48+00:00ESIS Publishing House
Algerian Group of Fracture Mechanics and Energy (AGFME), Greek Society of Experimental Mechanics of Materials (GSEMM), Italian Group of Fracture (IGF) and Sociedad Espanola de Integridad Estructural - Grupo Espanol de Fractura (SEIE-GEF) organized the 2nd Mediterranean Conference on Fracture and Structural Integrity, MedFract2.

February 14-16, 2022, Catania (Italy) & Web
2022-04-03T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/2121st European Conference on Fracture2022-03-01T05:33:46+00:00ESIS Publishing House
21st European Conference on Fracture – ECF21 was held in Catania (Italy), June 20-24, 2016.

Organizing Committee

Francesco Iacoviello

(Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale, Italy)

Giuseppe Andrea Ferro

(Politecnico di Torino, Italy)

Donato Firrao

(Politecnico di Torino, Italy)

Luca Susmel

(University of Sheffield, UK)

2022-03-01T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/2222nd European Conference on Fracture 2022-03-01T06:01:05+00:00ESIS Publishing House
22nd European Conference on Fracture – ECF22 was held in Belgrade (Serbia), August 26-31, 2018.
2022-03-01T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/16VSSFM - 2021, Summer School on Fracture Mechanics2022-02-25T04:51:52+00:00ESIS Publishing House
The scientific programme of the school contained different areas of mechanics including material science, mechanics of solid deformable body and others.

The leading researchers delivered lectures that deal with relevant problems of mechanical phenomena and present the results of latest studies in the respective areas.

The lectures were held in the form of webinar, presentation, open discussion with the ability to ask questions in the real time using the Google Meet platform.
2022-02-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/17ESIS Summer School - 2014 - Trondheim (Norway)2022-02-25T05:20:16+00:00ESIS Publishing House
This ESIS Summer School was organized in the frame of the ECF20 that was held in Trondheim (Norway) in 2014.
2022-02-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/18ESIS Summer School - 2016 Catania (Italy)2022-02-25T16:05:40+00:00ESIS Publishing House
This ESIS Summer School was organized in the frame of the ECF21 that was held in Catania (Italy) in 2016.
2022-02-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/19ESIS Summer School - 2018 Belgrade (Serbia)2022-02-25T17:16:59+00:00ESIS Publishing House
This ESIS Summer School was organized in the frame of the ECF22 that was held in Belgrade (Serbia) in 2018
2022-02-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/201st Winter School Trends on Additive Manufacturing for Engineering Applications 2022-02-25T18:00:40+00:00ESIS Publishing House
This 1st Winter School, Trends on Additive Manufacturing for Engineering Applications was organized online in the frame of the SIRAMM project in 2021.
2022-02-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2022 ESIS Publishing Househttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/151st Virtual ESIS Summer School2022-02-23T04:58:34+00:00Francesco Iacoviello
Due to the COVID-19 pandemia, in 2020 the Summer School organized in the frame of ECF23 (Funchal, Madeira, Portugal) was postponed to 2022. An analytical methodology for fretting fatigue assessment of structural components is proposed. Such a methodology allows to evaluate both the initial crack path and the lifetime of metallic structures under fretting fatigue elastic partial slip loading conditions in high-cycle fatigue.

The proposed methodology consists in the joint application of the multiaxial fatigue criterion by Carpinteri et al. together with the non-local approach (named Critical Direction Method) by Araújo et al. The philosophy related to the theory of the Critical Distance by Taylor is also taken into account in the procedure.

The stress field induced into two bodies in contact subject to fretting fatigue is analysed in Chapter 2, since it represents an input data for the methodology. Firstly, the damage process associated with fretting is described, by even exploiting the concept of fretting map. Subsequently, the main methodologies available in the literature to analyse fretting fatigue problems are briefly reviewed. Finally, the analytical formulation implemented in the proposed methodology is detailed.

Chapter 3 is devoted to the description of the advanced analytical methodology proposed in the present Ph.D. Thesis for fretting fatigue assessment of structural components. In particular, both the Critical Direction Method by Araújo et al., the theory of the Critical Distance by Taylor, and the Carpinteri et al. criterion for fretting fatigue are described. Then, the steps of the advanced methodology proposed in the present Ph.D. Thesis are detailed.

Chapter 4 deals with the validation of the proposed analytical methodology. In more detail, ten different experimental campaigns available in the literature and related to fretting fatigue tests in partial slip conditions are examined. Eight different materials, that is, four aluminium alloys, one titanium alloy and three steels, are analysed. The results obtained in terms of both crack path orientation and fatigue life are described and compared to the experimental ones available in the literature, for each experimental campaign examined.

Finally, conclusions are summarised in Chapter 5.
2021-04-10T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2021 Andrea Zanichellihttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/4Mechanical Modelling of Short-Fibre-Reinforced Materials under Static or Cyclic Loading2021-04-10T14:13:45+00:00Daniela Scorza
Fibre-Reinforced Composite (FRC) materials typically consist of two or more constituents combined at a macroscopic level. Due to their high mechanical
properties (such as good tensile strength, fracture resistance, durability, corrosion
resistance, enhanced wear and fatigue strength), composites are commonly used in
advanced engineering applications. The mechanical properties of such multiphase
materials depend on those of their constituents, i.e. the bulk material (matrix)
and the reinforcing phase (such as fibres), as well as on their reciprocal interface
bonding. The strength and durability design of composite structural elements must
consider the typical damage phenomena occurring in such materials under in-service
loading. Such degrading effects, usually responsible for a significant decrease of
the structural mechanical performances, can be mainly related to the fibre-matrix
delamination (also identified as debonding), fibre breaking, fibre buckling, matrix
plastic deformation or cracking. The proper evaluation of the safety factor of
composite materials during the service life and also at their limit state, is a crucial
task in the design and durability assessment of structural components made by
such materials.
The present Ph.D. Thesis deals with the development of a micro-mechanicalbased approach for the assessment of the mechanical behaviour of short fibre
reinforced composites under static and cyclic loading, by taking into account
the principal damage failure modes. A homogenisation approach, based on an
energetic formulation, has been generalised in order to take into account the spatial
arrangement and distribution of the fibre reinforcing phase. Fibres effectiveness is
considered by means of a proper parameter, the sliding function s, that quantifies
the stress transfer capability of the fibre-matrix interface bond. Such a parameter
has been determined through the fracture mechanics based approach proposed in
this Ph.D. Thesis, in alternative to the classical "Shear Lag" model. A correlation
between the present model and the shear lag one has been proposed in order to
allow the quantification of the static critical interface parameters (such as fracture
toughness and fracture energy), necessary to identified the condition of incipient
detachment propagation. The progressive debonding due to the action of cyclic
loads is quantified through a fatigue power law.
In order to consider all the micro-mechanical phenomena involved in static
and fatigue problems, the mechanical behaviour of the single constituents of the
composite are also analysed. The matrix is assumed to be characterised by a
linear elastic, elastic-plastic or brittle mechanical behaviour in case of static loads,
whereas an approach based on the experimental Wöhler diagrams (S-N curves)
is adopted to simulate fatigue effects. The fibre-reinforcing phase is assumed to
present a linear elastic behaviour until reaching a suitable condition of failure at
which the fibre breaks into two parts. Fibre-fibre reciprocal interaction is also
considered, whereas the effect of the cycle loading on the fibre material has been
neglected.
Finally, the formulation proposed has been implemented in a non-linear 2-D
FE code and used for the simulation of simple structural elements under static
and cyclic loads. Some of the obtained results have been reported, discussed and
compared with literature available data.
2021-04-01T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2021 Daniela Scorzahttps://esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph/catalog/book/3ESIS Recommendations for Determining the Fracture Resistance of Ductile Materials2020-01-13T18:43:14+00:00Francesco Iacoviello
This volume describes a European Structural Integrity Society Procedure for determining the crack growth fracture resistance behavior of ductile materials The fracture behavior is characterised in terms of either the variation in fracture resistance J or crack tip opening displacement delta with crack growth
2020-01-13T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2020 Francesco Iacoviello
